BUKIT MERTAJAM - A trailer driver involved in a fatal container accident in Penang has been charged with reckless driving under the Road Transport Act 1987.

Marhizan Johari, 51, pleaded not guilty to the charge during his appearance before Magistrate Mohd Harith Mohd Mazlan at the Bukit Mertajam Court on Nov 18.

He is accused of driving a trailer dangerously along Jalan Kebun Sireh in Bukit Mertajam on Nov 13 at approximately 9.30am, resulting in the death of 21-year-old Lee Zi Rou.

The court did not grant bail, citing public interest concerns raised by Deputy Public Prosecutor Zulfadzly Hassan, who noted that Marhizan had shown no remorse, reportedly making a “peace sign” while being brought to court earlier in the week.

The accident, which occurred on Jalan Bukit Tengah, saw Marhizan lose control of the trailer during a left turn. The container toppled, crushing Ms Lee’s vehicle.

Ms Lee, a clerk, was en route to work at the time and succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The container also struck another car driven by Mr Tan Chou Theng, 25, who sustained serious injuries and is currently hospitalised.

Central Seberang Perai district police chief ACP Helmi Aris confirmed that Marhizan was detained after the accident for investigations under the Road Transport Act 1987. Following the conclusion of his remand, it was reported on Nov 17 that he would face charges.

Ms Lee was laid to rest on Nov 17, with hundreds of family members and friends attending her funeral to pay their respects.

Magistrate Mohd Harith has set Jan 24, 2025, as the date for the next mention of the case. Deputy Public Prosecutor Zulfadzly Hassan represented the prosecution, while Marhizan was unrepresented during the proceedings. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
