BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The numbers are in for early voting turnout in Louisiana. The number of people who voted in person broke records, but there is still a loss in the number of people who voted compared to the last presidential election.

Over 960,000 Louisianans cast their ballots early. That is about 26,000 thousand fewer than the state saw in 2020 early voting. There are a number of reasons why that is between less voter turnout and stricter mail-in ballot rules. John Couvillon with JMC Analytics said a notable number is the big drop in the number of Black voters.

“Black turnout was quite mediocre statewide, and especially in East Baton Rouge Parish. So at this point in time, four years ago, 30% of the early-voting electorate was Black. It was 25% as of last night,” Couvillon said. “That doesn’t really matter in Louisiana per say, except perhaps in the mayor, perhaps in the Mayor-President’s race.”

Louisiana has also seen a trend of Republicans beginning to out vote Democrats in early voting in the last few years. It also shows nationwide that Republicans are turning out.

“Four years ago, Democrats had a seven-point plurality with early voting. As of last night, it was a nine-point Republican plurality, where this is the first time I have ever seen Republicans lead all ten nights [of early voting] and plus Republicans barely lead in early voting. That’s been more of a Democratic stronghold,” Couvillon said.

The Louisiana Secretary of State’s office is touting record numbers of people voting in person early. The said 849,784 voters cast their ballots early in person, with 103,456 of those being on the last day alone…
