Hong Kong housing authorities will work with academics and use artificial intelligence (AI) in designing and redeveloping a landmark public estate with a sea view.
Wah Fu Estate in Pok Fu Lam has been described as a “luxury residence for ordinary people” for its coastal location set against a hilly backdrop in the southwest of Hong Kong Island.
Authorities will work with professors from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the community to preserve or recreate features that residents have appreciated since the estate was built in 1967.
“It was the most iconic public housing estate as it was the first project designed with a town centre concept,” said Helen Leung Hay-lin, a chief architect from the Housing Department.
“We hope the redeveloped estate will be a pilot project where we do not only preserve the human touch but also pilot a smart community and smart construction.”
The estate provided not only 9,200 rental flats in high-rise blocks, but also shopping centres, schools, a bus terminus and community facilities.
