Film Factory Entertainment has acquired worldwide sales rights to Daniel Guzmán’s “The Redemption,” starring Guzmán, “Money Heist’s” Itziar Ituño, Susana Abaitua who headed Netflix hit “Crazy About You” and Luis Tosar, co-star of “Undercover,” the second highest-grossing Spanish film of 2024.
Packing a top-notch Spanish cast, “The Redemption,” (“La Deuda”) opens Spain’s Malaga Festival this March 14 with a drama tensed by large thriller elements from the near get-go.
The third feature from Guzmán, an actor who burst on the scene as a scribe-helmer with his 2015 debut “Nothing in Return” which scored Spanish Academy Goyas for new director and breakout actor (Miguel Herrán), “The Redemption” also delivers multiple Guzmán auteurist traits: Heartfelt sentiment, the belief in bedrock found-family relations, social issue reference and a sympathy for the downtrodden.
Here, Lucas, 47, and Antonia, over 90 but still vital, share Antonia’s central city apartment. Despite Lucas’ being out of work, they live happily enough – Lucas attending to Antonia’s needs and the two buoyed by his optimism – until an investment fund acquires the building to turn it into tourist rentals.
Soon the fund serves an eviction order to Antonia, prompting Lucas, desperate to secure the money needed to avoid Antonia’s losing her home, to make a mistake which has huge life-changing consequences, kicking in the film’s thriller propulsion as Lucas’ fate spirals out of control.
“‘The Redemption’ is a personal film that talks about characters who, even though they have everything against them, do not stop looking forward with enthusiasm. Affection, respect and empathy help them to face their reality with joy, a sense of humor and class pride,” said Guzmán.
Guzmán’s El Niño Producciones produces with Aquí y Allí Films and La Mirada Oblicua.
Pedro Hernández, head of Aquí y Allí Films, behind Antonio Méndez Esparza’s “Life and Nothing More,” calls the film his company’s biggest broad audience play to date. RTVE, Movistar Plus+, Telemadrid and Canal Sur have all acquired the film, which has won funding from Spain’s ICAA film agency and the Community of Madrid.
“This endorsement demonstrates the industry’s interest and confidence in the work of Guzmán and his team,” commented Film Factory. “We are especially excited to join a project by Daniel Guzmán again in this sensitive and innovative story. We are convinced that ‘The Redemption’ will have a wide international run,” said Vicente Canales, Film Factory director. Canales will take charge of the film’s international sales.
