Malaysia’s Johor state will be reverting to a Saturday-Sunday weekend from next year, its regent has announced.

The state, which borders neighbouring Singapore, currently has its weekend on Friday and Saturday.

In a statement on Monday, Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim announced that the change will take effect from January 1, 2025.

The move followed consultation with the Johor Islamic Religious Council and had “the consent and blessing” of his father Sultan Ibrahim, Malaysia’s king, Tunku Ismail said in a statement on Facebook.

He also mentioned that he had asked Johor’s chief minister, Onn Hafiz Ghazi, and the Johor mufti to discuss and examine the matter thoroughly.
