A federal judge in Florida ruled the man accused of lingering in the bushes with a rifle for hours near former President Trump's West Palm Beach golf course will be held without bail while he awaits his trial, per multiple reports.

The big picture: Ryan Routh was charged with two gun crimes after he allegedly pointed a gun through the tree line surrounding the golf course where the former president was playing. It was the second apparent assassination attempt against Trump this year.

  • Prosecutors argued Routh, who has an extensive criminal record, poses too much of a danger to society not to remain detained pending his trial.
  • At an initial hearing last week, Magistrate Judge Ryon M. McCabe ordered Routh remain in custody.
  • The 58-year-old has yet to enter a plea.

Zoom in: Routh was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number in his initial appearance.

  • If convicted, officials said he could face up to 15 years in prison on the first charge and possibly five on the second, the Associated Press reported.
  • In the area Routh was hiding, agents found a digital camera, two bags and a loaded SKS-style rifle with a scope, per the criminal complaint.

Between the lines: Prosecutors unveiled in a court filing Monday a letter a civilian witness said Routh had dropped off at his house months prior.

  • "This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you. I tried my best and gave it all the gumption I could muster. It is up to you now to finish the job; and I will offer $150,000 to whomever can complete the job," the letter read.
  • The letter was one item in a box Routh allegedly gave the witness containing ammunition, a metal pipe, miscellaneous building materials, tools, four phones and other letters, court filings allege.
  • The unnamed witness did not open the box until after Routh's arrest.

Zoom out: Routh, who at some point relocated from North Carolina to Hawaii, was convicted of felonies in North Carolina in December 2002 and March 2010, Markenzy Lapointe, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, said at a recent news conference.

  • He was prohibited from possessing a firearm, Lapointe said.
  • Routh had previously appeared in a number of news stories for his fervent support of and offers to serve for Ukraine in its war against Russia.
  • In a self-published book, Routh wrote Iran was "free to assassinate Trump," criticizing the former president for leaving the Iran nuclear deal.
