Having trailed as late as the 88th minute of a Manchester derby otherwise low on both quality and drama, Manchester United struck twice at the death to extend their rivals’ nightmare run of form.

Amad Diallo was the star of the show, first winning a penalty which Bruno Fernandes converted before then running in on goal to score a 90th-minute winner which means City have now lost eight of their last 11 games.

United were very slow to get going, failing to register a shot on target until the 62nd minute, but City were only marginally better. Even their opening goal was rather fortuitous.

Kevin De Bruyne took a corner short to Ilkay Gündogan who underhit his return pass to the Belgian. De Bruyne managed to get enough on the ball to get his cross into the box, but only via a massive deflection off Diallo.

The ball found its way to Josko Gvardiol, who headed in his fourth Premier League goal of the season to go clear of every other City player bar Erling Haaland (13) in the goalscoring charts.

The goal meant that only Wolves (nine) and Southampton (six) have conceded more goals from corners all season in the Premier League than United have only since Amorim came in (four).

United came out for the second half with more attacking intent but didn’t create tonnes of chances until late on. Fernandes missed their best chance, sending his effort wide of the target after being put through on goal by Rasmus Højlund.

Diallo inspired the late turnaround, pouncing on a Matheus Nunes mistake to win the penalty, before then scoring the dramatic winning goal. United are now only five points behind City.

The champions failed to take advantage of Liverpool and Arsenal slipping up on Saturday, and are now nine points off the lead, having played one game more. There’s a long way to go, but it’s hard to see how City can still claim to be in the title race after this run of form.
