We look ahead to Sunday’s WSL midday kick off at Leigh Sports Village with our Man Utd vs Chelsea prediction and preview. Both teams dropped points on the opening day, so who will bounce back?

Man Utd vs Chelsea: The Key Stats

  • According to the Opta supercomputer, Chelsea are tipped for their first win of the season, emerging as victors in 48.1% of the 10,000 simulations.
  • Chelsea are the only team that Manchester United have never beaten in the WSL, failing in all 13 attempts (D2 L11); only four teams have faced an opponent more times in the competition without winning.
  • Chelsea have won 17 of their 20 meetings with Man Utd across all competitions (D2 L1), though did draw this fixture last season 1-1 at Leigh Sports Village.

It is only Matchday 2 of the 2026-27 Women’s Super League season, but both Manchester United and Chelsea already find themselves in need of a statement result.

Neither opened their campaign with a win, and an early meeting between two of the league’s established ‘big four’ could have an important bearing on the tone of their respective seasons.

Manchester United lost their opening game to London City Lionesses, and are enduring their longest winless run since reforming in 2018 (D2 L3).

Chelsea began a WSL season without a victory for only the third time in their history after a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa. On both previous occasions, they then failed to win the title.

Despite earning a point in this fixture last season, United’s record against the WSL’s other established ‘big four’ clubs remains a concern.

Since the start of 2023-24, the Red Devils have won just one of 18 league matches against Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City (D6 L11), collecting nine points from a possible 54. Chelsea, by comparison, have picked up 36 points in such fixtures.

Yet there were reasons for concern in the champions’ opening-day draw with Villa. Chelsea registered 35 shots, the most they have ever attempted in a WSL match without winning, generating 3.6 expected goals (xG).

More worryingly, the Blues have failed to win five of the 19 league games in which they have taken the lead since the start of last season (D5), as many as across the previous 87 such matches combined.

Lauren James embodied Chelsea’s frustration. Her 11 shots were the most she has attempted in a WSL game for the club, but while she opened the scoring in the first half, the England international was unable to find another to win it for the Blues.

United, by contrast, managed just four shots against London City, their joint-second fewest in a WSL match.

The Red Devils have recently relied on late drama, with each of their last three league goals arriving in the 90th minute or later. No team has ever had a longer run of consecutive WSL goals scored at 90+ minutes, matching previous streaks set by Arsenal in October 2023 and Brighton in March 2024.

After her goal on MD1 against London City, Simi Awujo will look to become just the third Manchester United player to score in both of the Red Devils’ opening two games of a WSL campaign, after Grace Clinton in 2024-25 and Melvine Malard in 2025-26.

Chelsea’s recent record on the road also points in their favour.

Although they have won their opening away league fixture in just two of the last eight seasons (D4 L2), both of those victories came in the last two seasons under Bompastor.

The Blues have also only lost one of their last 24 WSL away games (W17 D6), while they’ve scored in each of their last 36 away league matches, already the longest such run in competition history.

Chelsea’s underlying metrics suggest they should create opportunities, but their ability to convert them remains the question after the opening weekend.

United, however, have made a habit of starting strongly at home, going unbeaten in such opening fixtures in each of the last six WSL seasons (W4 D2), a run that started with a 1-1 draw against Chelsea in 2020-21.

Man Utd vs Chelsea Head-to-Head

Chelsea are unbeaten in all 13 of their WSL meetings with Manchester United (W11 D2), making the Blues the only current WSL side the Red Devils have never beaten in the competition.

Man Utd Worst Records in WSL vs Opponents

United’s only victory across their 20 games against Chelsea in all competitions remains the 2023-24 Women’s FA Cup semi-final.

That said, Chelsea’s recent trips to Manchester have not always been straightforward. They have failed to win four of their last seven WSL matches in the city (W3 D2 L2), including a 5-1 defeat to Manchester City in February.

Goals have been at a premium in recent meetings between these two sides; the last four league meetings have produced just five goals in total, with Chelsea winning three of those matches 1-0 before the teams shared a 1-1 draw at Leigh Sports Village last season.

Prior to last season’s 1-1 draw, each of Chelsea’s previous four WSL visits to Leigh had ended in victory, with the Blues outscoring United 16-2 across those matches.

In the most recent of those victories, however, United produced a higher xG total than Chelsea despite falling to a 1-0 defeat.
