We look ahead to Sunday’s Premier League game at Old Trafford with our Man Utd vs Leicester prediction and preview. Ruud van Nistelrooy looks to sign off as United’s interim boss on a high.
Manchester United vs Leicester City Stats: The Key Insights
- Manchester United are favourites to win, with the Opta supercomputer seeing them win in 65.3% of simulations.
- The Red Devils’ nine goals scored is their lowest tally at this stage of a season in Premier League history.
- Leicester City have only won one of their last 14 Premier League trips to Old Trafford.
The Rúben Amorim era is coming to Manchester United. However, Ruud van Nistelrooy has one game left as interim manager, as his time in charge ends on Sunday.
The former striker started with a 5-2 victory over Leicester in the EFL Cup, followed by a 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the Premier League and a 2-0 win over PAOK Salonika in the Europa League on Thursday.
The Red Devils will be hopeful of signing off before the international break with a win in the league when they face Leicester again. Their recent history against promoted sides suggests they will do just that.
United have won 16 of their last 18 top-flight games against promoted teams (D2), since a 4-1 loss at Watford in November 2021.
However, it has been a rocky season for the hosts. They have 12 points so far, which is their lowest return after 10 top-flight games since 1986-87 (eight), while their nine goals scored is their fewest at this stage since 1973-74 (also nine). Their poor start led to the dismissal of Erik ten Hag, with Amorim officially replacing him next week.
United have the biggest negative difference between goals (9) and expected goals (16.8 xG) in the Premier League this season (-7.8). Just two of those nine goals have come in the first half of games – the joint-fewest in the division along with Crystal Palace.
One bright spark for United has been Bruno Fernandes’ return to scoring. He has scored three times under Van Nistelrooy. Two of those goals came against the Foxes in their EFL Cup match. In all competitions, Fernandes has contributed to eight goals in seven starts against Leicester, scoring four goals and providing four assists.
Leicester come into this clash having snatched a point in a last-gasp 1-1 draw with 10-man Ipswich Town last time out.
Each of their last four Premier League away games have seen a result-altering goal scored in the 90th minute (incl. stoppage time). The most recent two benefitted Leicester, having also earned a last-minute win over Southampton before that draw with Ipswich, with Jordan Ayew scoring both.
They are also one of just two teams – along with Manchester City – to have scored in all 10 of their Premier League games so far.
Man Utd vs Leicester Head-to-Head
Man Utd have lost just two of their last 17 Premier League games against Leicester (W10 D5), with those defeats coming consecutively in May and October 2021.
They have also scored in each of their last 28 Premier League games against the Foxes since a 1-0 loss in January 1998. In their top-flight history, only against Arsenal have they ever had a longer scoring streak (30, between 1953 and 1968).
Leicester, have won just one of their last 14 Premier League away games against Manchester United (D3 L10), a 2-1 victory in May 2021.
