Having earned their first win of the Ligue 1 campaign last week, Luis Enrique’s champions have a huge game to come on Sunday. We look ahead to Le Classique with our Marseille vs PSG prediction and preview.
Marseille vs PSG: The Key Stats
- The Opta supercomputer has assigned Paris Saint-Germain a 63.4% chance of victory when they visit rivals Marseille on Sunday.
- This will be Luis Enrique’s 182nd game in charge of PSG, surpassing his tally as Barcelona manager. Only Luis Fernández (244) and Georges Peyroche (211) have ever led the Parisiens for more matches.
- Marseille have lost three of their first four Ligue 1 matches in 2026-27 (W1) – they have never started a top-flight campaign with four defeats in their first five games.
Paris Saint-Germain finally got their Ligue 1 title defence up and running at the fourth time of asking last week, with Ferran Torres scoring in a narrow 1-0 win at Brest. Sunday’s Classique gives them the chance to starting building some momentum.
Prior to beating Brest, the two-time UEFA Champions League winners only had two points on the board after three games, allowing Lille, Monaco and Rennes to get a head start at the top of the table.
Marseille‘s Ligue 1 form has been even worse, though, suffering three straight defeats since they started the Bruno Génésio era with a Matchday 1 rout of Strasbourg.
That means there is pressure on both teams ahead Le Classique, as the two most successful and best-supported clubs in French football tussle at the Vélodrome.
Luis Enrique will not want to make any excuses for his team’s slow start, but PSG are only the second team this century (after Lorient in 2022-23) to play four of their first five matches of a Ligue 1 season on the road.
Their solitary defeat of this campaign (2-1 to Monaco) came at the Parc des Princes, though, and they have only lost one of their last eight away league games (W5 D2), that one coming at Paris FC. That means their last loss outside the capital was at Rennes in February.
Sunday’s match will bring up a landmark for Luis Enrique, as he oversees his 182nd game in charge of PSG in all competitions (W120 D34 L27), surpassing the 181 he took charge of at Barcelona to make his tenure in Paris the longest of his managerial career.
And if his attacking players fire, the Spaniard will be confident of marking the occasion with a victory. Torres’ winner against Brest last week was his sixth goal in his first five appearances for PSG, equalling Zlatan Ibrahimović’s club record set in 2012.
Ousmane Dembélé teed up Spain’s World Cup winner for that goal, reaching four assists in all competitions this season already – no player from Europe’s top five leagues has more.
And summer addition Maghnes Akliouche scored three goals against Marseille in Ligue 1 for his former club Monaco, only matching that tally versus Rennes.
Only Désiré Doué (399 minutes) has played more minutes than Akliouche (396) among PSG forwards in all competitions this season, so he should be expected to play a prominent role here.
PSG’s frontline will be up against a porous Marseille backline. Indeed, the 36 Ligue 1 goals they’ve conceded in 2026 is the joint most of any ever-present team in the competition (Nice also on 36 going into MD5).
Marseille have never previously started a top-flight campaign by suffering as many as four defeats in their opening five matches, so a piece of unwanted history could beckon for them this weekend.
Génésio, meanwhile, could suffer four defeats from his first five Ligue 1 matches at the helm; the only manager(s) in the club’s history to record as bad a start as that was the duo of Willy Kohut and André Gascard so way back in 1938.
Marseille also started their UEFA Europa League campaign with a chastening 4-1 defeat to Besiktas on Thursday and face a swift turnaround ahead of this fixture, while PSG have had a full week of rest.
Marseille vs PSG Head-to-Head
Marseille have lost 38 matches against PSG in all competitions since the start of the 21st century (W13 D12 L38), which is 15 more than against any other opponent.
At home, they have won just one of their last 13 Ligue 1 meetings with PSG (W1 D3 L9), though that was their most recent encounter, almost exactly one year ago on 22 September 2025.
An early own goal from Marquinhos decided that encounter as Marseille triumphed 1-0.
And Marseille may also be able to take heart from Génésio’s strong record against PSG. Since his Ligue 1 managerial debut in January 2016, Génésio’s six wins over PSG is at least two more than any other coach in that period.

The Opta supercomputer is firmly behind PSG ahead of this game, as they won 63.4% of the model’s 10,000 pre-match simulations.
Marseille were only victorious in 16.2%, with the remaining 20.4% ending level.
PSG also remain clear favourites to retain their Ligue 1 title in the supercomputer’s season predictions, doing so in 57.1% of sims. Marseille’s hopes are down at 0.4%, with seven other teams viewed as more likely to dethrone Luis Enrique’s men.
