As lifestyle influencers go, Martha Stewart is the OG who created a billion-dollar business empire that has spanned publishing, television, merchandise, and more. Meanwhile, Meghan Markle is a recent entrant to the space who has seen her Netflix series cancelled and her As Ever brand struggle to get off the ground.
Stewart made headlines last year when she suggested in an interview with Yahoo Lifestyle that the former Suits star lacks authenticity. “I don’t really know very well, and I hope she knows what she’s talking about. Authenticity, to me, is everything. And to be authentic and knowledgeable about your subject matter is extremely important,” she said at the time.
Despite Markle’s eyebrow-raising Daytime Emmy nomination for her primetime streaming series With Love, Meghan, Stewart doesn’t seem to be any more impressed with the one-time royal a year later.
Stewart’s Shade
The 85 year old is on the cover of this weeks’ People magazine recreating a spread she did with the weekly back in 1995. In the Q&A portion of the piece, she was asked what she is like at parties.
“My friends call me LIFO: last in, first out,” she said. “I don’t like cocktail parties terribly much. I don’t like standing around. If it’s a dinner, I like to get there when people are about to sit down. And then I like to leave shortly after dessert is served. But I have a good time while I’m there.”
Then she mentioned an event she recently attended with Markle. “I had dinner with Meghan Markle the other night. We were both guests at a dinner party in California. And she had just gotten back from the palace. I didn’t talk to her really more than to say a couple words, but I know she was talking about it,” Stewart added.
The interviewer asked Stewart what she thinks “about her stepping into your space with her own cooking show,” and she didn’t hold back.
“If you’re an actress, it’s hard to then transition to a princess and then from a princess into a homemaking guru on a television show. It doesn’t sort of follow. So go from there,” Stewart said.
Megyn did her best to read between the lines. “I think it’s actually kind of cool that Martha Stewart, who’s now in her eighties, just doesn’t give an eff. She’s like, I’m gonna cut this bitch, and I don’t care if you don’t like it,” she noted.
“She is clearly mocking her… [with the] ‘back from the palace’ and how difficult it is to try to jump from these different roles right into making yourself a homemaking guru,” Megyn theorized. “She was telegraphing to us all: It ain’t as lazy as it looks, and she’s failing. That’s really what she was saying. That’s my Martha Stewart decoder for you.”
Out of Her League
As Megyn and Maureen Callahan discovered in their hilarious With Love, Megyn parody, Markle seemingly ‘borrowed’ Stewart’s one-pot pasta recipe and attempted to pass it off as her own. Perhaps that is why Megyn’s guest, Glenn Greenwald, doesn’t think Stewart holds Markle in particularly high regard.
“I don’t think she respects the fact that Meghan Markle is a worthy competitor,” he posited. “I love Martha Stewart because she is just so direct… I mean, she went to prison and she came out and built this whole second career… Obviously, built a gigantic business too. She is not somebody to play around with, and that passive-aggressive criticism of Meghan Markle there was so enjoyable and so deserved.”
