Insomniac Games finally showed Marvel’s Wolverine again during the June 2026 State of Play, showing off grisly new combat and an exciting new story. Here’s everything we know so far.
Ditching sticky spiderwebs for adamantium claws, Insomniac Games is getting a little bloody with its next Marvel superhero game. On the back of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 in 2023, Marvel’s Wolverine is fast-approaching in 2026.
Here’s everything we know about Logan’s long-awaited return on PS5.
Release date & platforms
Marvel’s Wolverine is officially set to release on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.
The release window was originally set for Fall 2026, but we got confirmation on the proper date in February. This puts it well ahead of any possible conflict with the highly-anticipated GTA 6 launch later on November 19.
The game will launch exclusively on PS5, with no confirmation yet of a PC port or other platforms to follow. Though, should history repeat itself, it’s safe to expect Wolverine on PC eventually, you might just have to wait a few years.
Story details
The 2021 footage set the tone: Logan in the aftermath of a bar fight, claws dripping, violence raw and unflinching. Longtime fans recognized hints of The Princess Bar in Madripoor, a classic Marvel location tied to Wolverine’s darker chapters.
Insomniac GamesThe 2025 trailer, on the other hand, showed far more action, parkour, and the reveal of a fan-favorite X-Men character: Mystique.
As revealed in the June 2026 State of Play, Wolverine must rescue a group of kidnapped mutants. He isn’t alone; the June trailer also showed off Jean Gray, who teams up with Wolverine to take down cybernetically-enhanced baddies. Sabertooth was also shown off, so we can expect him to be involved in some way.
Insomniac has confirmed this will be a standalone story. While it may exist in the same universe as the studio’s Spider-Man games, it won’t be a crossover title.
Gameplay
The State of Play trailer showed off a close look at the combat that players can expect. It’s a grisly, bloody affair that pulls no punches when it comes to gore.
- Visceral combat: Brutal claw strikes, counterattacks, and close-quarters ferocity instead of gadget-heavy combat.
- Gritty environments: Footage suggests more grounded, atmospheric settings compared to Spider-Man’s bright cityscapes. We saw Logan riding a motorcycle as well.
- Standalone tone: This won’t be a lighthearted romp. Insomniac is leaning into Wolverine’s mature, violent side.
Development updates
Originally announced in 2021, the game’s leadership shifted in 2024, with Marcus Smith and Mike Daly taking over as creative leads.
In 2023, internal leaks from a ransomware attack spilled early concepts and story drafts, though Insomniac made clear those materials didn’t represent the final game.
