John Cena revealed he’s a “confident” driver in real life, but admitted he hasn’t always been nice behind the wheel.
“I used to yell at folks,” he told Page Six earlier this week at the New York premiere of his new Apple+ movie, “Matchbox.”
However, the former wrestler-turned-movie star said he’s turned over a new leaf.
“Now, I try to lean into patience, and empathy and being in the moment,” he explained, “especially when stuck in traffic. This is just what happens. And it’s actually helped me quite a bit in dealing with the stress of life. So I do yell a lot.”
The “F9” star described himself as a “confident driver.”
“Now, whether I’m good — there’s a bunch of different lenses on that. If you’re driving on the road and you see me driving, you may say, I’m a P.O.S. or a bad driver. I feel I’m confident behind the wheel.”
Cena, 49, added that he does not have “any fuzzy dice” dangling from the rearview mirror. Though he does have “one fuzzy keychain because it was a wonderful gift from my wife [Shay Shariatzadeh], and that is the keychain to the Honda Civic that I have.”
He plays a spy and former soldier in the movie, based on the beloved toy brand Matchbox by Mattel.
The WWE alum has fond memories of the iconic brand.
“I had so many Matchbox cars as a kid,” he gushed. “I’m one of five. I have four brothers, and the cars were community property. We had a bucket, a Matchbox bucket. When we wanted to play Matchbox, we would dump out the bucket and then draft the cars.”
However, his brothers were savvy negotiators who knew that Cena’s favorite was an Oldsmobile 442, so “they would just pick it first, and then I’d trade like 4 or 5 cars to get my favorite,” he said.
When Page Six expressed sympathy for his mom, theorizing that she never saw a toilet seat down, Cena laughed.
“I love her to death,” he gushed. “I want to harness her patience one day. Amazing human being, my mom.”
