Mayor Mamdani Booed In Venture Out To Lone Borough That Didn’t Vote For Him

Democratic New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was booed Tuesday night in Staten Island during an event highlighting crime, according to the Staten Island Advance.

Mamdani also received jeers and profanities at the 43rd annual New York Police Department (NYPD)’s Patrol Borough Staten Island National Night Out Against Crime, according to the Staten Island Advance. The event was held at Turtle Circle on the Midland Beach Boardwalk and drew roughly 3,500 attendees.

The crowd booed Mamdani as he entered the stage for the event, according to a video shared on X by Jeff Coltin, the editor of City and State NY, a website and weekly magazine covering politics and policy in New York. The video appears to have originated on Facebook.

In the video, the crowd is booing so loudly that they are drowning out Mamdani’s brief remarks. One person can be heard yelling, “Get off our Island,” while another says, “Fuck you.” Among the attendees was Staten Island artist Scott LoBaido, who posted a video on Instagram ahead of the event criticizing Mamdani for purportedly slashing the police budget.

Another video of the event shows members of the crowd flashing Mamdani a thumbs-down sign as he exits the stage. Staten Island is the only borough that Mamdani lost in the November 2025 mayoral election, the Staten Island Advance reported. Mamdani received a total of 33,820 votes (22.7%) compared to former Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo who received 82,494 votes (55.4%) and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa who received 31,712 votes (21.3%), according to the outlet.

Since taking office, Mamdani has faced criticism for reportedly failing to name any Jewish members to his judicial advisory committee, excluding key immigrant groups on a map of New York City, and proposing a pied-à-terre tax on homeowners’ secondary residences. Additionally, hate crimes against Jews haven risen under Mamdani’s leadership, the New York Post reported, citing police data.

Tuesday night’s event is not the first time Mamdani has been snubbed.

Mamdani recently attended a funeral for a fallen Army sergeant and prepared a eulogy, but was never called to speak, according to the New York Post.
