A small sign spotted over a fry station at McDonald's has left the internet in hysterics.

A Reddit user posted an image of serving instructions for serving, which read: 'Fluff don't stuff the fries.'

At McDonald's, 'fluffing' means ensuring fries are not overpacked — giving them a fuller appearance while keeping portions consistent.

However, employees admitted they often ignore the rule and claimed the 'gnarly' machine would make them lose their appetites

'By the looks of that fry station I wouldn't even eat there. Lol,' a Reddit user joked in a post.

Several commenters explained the reasoning behind the rule.

'It's a weight thing. The sizes are supposed to be a specific weight not volume. So when the boxes are stuffed then inventory is thrown off,' a commenter wrote.

'You wanna fill the box up good but not to where it's bulging and stuffed.'

A Reddit user posted a photo of a McDonald's fry machine with a sign that said: 'Fluff don't stuff the fries'

At McDonald's, 'fluffing' french fries means not overpacking the carton and leaving enough space for them to look suitable for customers

'This is a known thing in all McDonald’s and it's claimed to be so the fries sit more vertical and appealing like a commercial fry,' a shift manager responded.

'Stuffing them make them squished and Broken and when they get cold in 3 minutes in a bag how they’re set makes a difference. That being said, dumb.'

'I would sometimes get called out for "over stuffing the fries," but I swear to god I rather over stuff then, than a whiny customer complaining that we didn’t give them "enough fries," another employee added.

A few employees also shared stories about the trouble they got into by 'fluffing' the fries.

'My GM went crazy when she saw me fill in the sizes. She would literally grab a medium sized one and fill it into the large and shake it in such a way that it seemed to be a genuine large order of fries,' a cashier wrote.

'Got shouted at by my GM for stuffing fries, i had to stop. sorry yall,' a crew trainer admitted.

A container of french fries has been one of the restaurant chain's longtime popular orders.

The fries arrive frozen and are kept in freezers until they're ready to be cooked.

McDonald's serves around 3.6 billion servings of french fries every year in the US

Social media users claiming to be employees found the sign hilarious despite knowing why the 'fluff' rule is in place

A container of french fries has been one of the restaurant chain's longtime popular orders.

The fries arrive frozen and are kept in freezers until they're ready to be cooked.

Customers can order them in small, medium, or large sizes, and they come with nearly all of McDonald's afternoon meals.

The fast food empire confirmed the average price for a medium-sized order was $3.29 in 2024.

However, the total cost of fries varies based on location and whether they're part of a special offer.

The menu item has recently been a popular item on the fast-food chain's McValue platform, which launched last January.

It's Buy One, Add One $1, and $5 Meal Deals each come with a small fry, and Rewards members can get a free medium fry with any $1+ purchase when ordering on the app on Fridays.

McDonald's has not revealed its 2025 fry sales, but the company revealed that it serves around 3.6 billion servings of french fries every year in the US.
