Megyn Has ‘Aha Moment’ About Oprah After Watching Her Sit-Down with Mel Robbins: ‘She’s an Actress’

It has been a week of revelations for Megyn when it comes to Oprah Winfrey. 

First, she watched the former queen of daytime racialize the Lindsay Clancy trial and verdict, which led her to question how she ever let Winfrey “influence my thinking.” But that proved to be the tip of the iceberg. 

Winfrey sat down for an interview with self-help author and podcaster Mel Robbins that dropped Thursday. The 80-minute sit-down was billed as “one of the most powerful conversations ever recorded on The Mel Robbins Podcast,” but Megyn walked away feeling anything but inspired.

On Friday’s show, Megyn was joined by Maureen Callahan, host of MK Media’s The Nerve, to discuss the interview and the “aha moment” Megyn had while watching it.

Crocodile Tears?

Callahan is no fan of Robbins, whom she calls “insufferable” and unqualified to deliver the self-help advice she dishes out, but the interview got Megyn thinking about the con Winfrey has potentially been perpetrating for years.

The “aha moment” came after watching Winfrey’s behavior during the conversation with Robbins and the very empty ‘wisdom’ she dispensed. The first eyebrow-raising moment arrived just four minutes into the interview when the billionaire seemingly got emotional while talking about her accomplishments.

“I believe that I’ve had,” she began normally before taking a long pause and contorting her face as though she was overcome with emotion. Her voice deepened when she added, “just the most blessed life on earth.”

“I just can’t get over how blessed I have been. I can’t get over it. I marvel at what God and the life forces have done for me,” Winfrey stammered in a breathless whisper.

And then, as though a switch flipped, she was back to her normal cadence with nary a tear in sight. That is when she reminded everyone how unique and one-of-a-kind she is.

“I marvel at that, but when I think about it now, from the point of view of 72, I realize that what I have acquired is not as magnificent or extraordinary as who I have become,” Winfrey explained. “I know that the world looks at what I, what I have acquired, but it’s who I have become. And I recognize that the work to become myself is the same work and ability that everybody has to become the most of themselves, and I am most proud of the woman that I have become.”

The abrupt and dramatic change in tone led Megyn to wonder if Winfrey was doing “a little acting bit.” Callahan “100 percent” agreed and called the shtick “crocodile tears.” And then there was what Megyn considered a lack of humility.

“This is how this should have gone: ‘I believe that I’ve had just the most blessed life on earth, and I am so grateful to this amazing country and the people in it for bestowing on me these many blessings. I owe it all to my fans,'” Megyn posited. “Instead, [we got]: ‘What you really need to know is how great I am.'”

Megyn’s ‘Aha Moment’

In case you are wondering if things got any better as the conversation went on, Megyn played Winfrey’s “parting words” to the audience:

WINFREY: My parting words are: You were born to fulfill the dream of your life here on Earth. You were born into this planet, into the density of this gravitational pull, to fulfill the dream of your life and of the creator’s dream of your life here on Earth. Get about the business of doing that. 

ROBBINS: You heard her! Get about the business of doing that. That’s right.

The “emptiness,” in Megyn’s view, rivaled that of fellow fake profundity queen Kamala Harris, but watching Winfrey dole out hollow advice with her trademark dramatized delivery led to a realization.

“Can I tell you something? Oprah coined that phrase ‘aha moment.’ I had my own ‘aha moment’ in watching that, which was: I’ve been lied to by many years by this person. When I was younger and more gullible… I was more willing to believe utter pablum like that,” Megyn admitted. “I was sold a bunch of nonsense by this woman because she is an actress. What I saw there was acting in the same way you get from a televangelist, a snake oil salesman.”

Instead of “offering profundities,” as Megyn once believed was the case, she realized Winfrey has been “taking banal, meaningless statements and putting the force of an over actress behind them.” Like “millions of American women who had never been sold this particular brand of product before,” Megyn said she was “buying it.”

That is no longer the case. “She got over [her feigned emotion]… very quickly because it was acting. She was acting like she did in the Meghan Markle interview. It just took my own maturity and perhaps her distance from her actual acting career by starring in movies like The Color Purple… that the two have come together to show me what was happening,” Megyn said.

“I was defrauded,” she concluded. “I was misled.”
