As the first major awards show of year, the Golden Globes set the tone for what the rest of the season’s red carpets might look like — and judging by Sunday’s looks, to hear Melissa Rivers tell us, fashion fans can expect plenty of “safe and pretty, but not jaw-dropping” gowns in the months to come.

“The Globes are usually where [stars] have fun and take bigger risks; the Academy Awards is the most formal,” the “Fashion Police” alum and daughter of late icon Joan Rivers tells Page Six Style.

“I always say [the Oscars are] like going to your very rich grandparents’ house and you’re not sure if you’re in the will.”

So Rivers found it “really interesting” that so many stars “looked like they could have stepped out of a high-end deb ball” at the Globes, too. Below, she breaks down the best and worst of this year’s carpet.

Rivers calls Fanning’s leopard print-accented ballgown “the only real big fashion moment that was edgy” of the evening, but she’s “kind of on the fence” about the design itself.

“She’s such a fashion girl that of course you take notice,” she says. “It felt very runway, which is a good thing. And that’s what we look to her for. If it had walked past me on a runway, I would’ve went, ‘Interesting!'”

“Come on — the dress, the body, the hair, the makeup, the on-trend chocolate brown, the big huge wrap. She owned the carpet, full stop.”

Zoë Kravitz

“Neat as a pin, as my mother used to say. Every angle, everything was perfect. Saint Laurent had a big night.”

Zendaya

“I of course liked Zendaya; when do you not like Zendaya? And the color!”

Demi Moore

“In that structured Armani Privé … she was having such a moment, and the dress met the moment. Clearly, shoulders are the new cleavage!”

“The gloves did not add. And I understood what the dress was, [but] it felt to me like it was in the garment bag too long. Like it didn’t have the life and the lightness that I think was the intention. Which is unfortunate, because if you just look at it as a dress, it’s pretty cool! I just wanted to fluff it. Someone put it best to me — they said, ‘It looked sad.'”

“I felt like it overwhelmed her, between the color and the fabric and the gloves. And Kerry doesn’t really miss!”

“The men I took as a personal affront. The bucket hat, the color, the velour, the turtleneck and the matching glasses … “

Andrew Scott

“These men going for these major monochromatic moments … I can’t unsee this. You’re not on a runway!”

Glen Powell

“The other one that upset me was my super-secret crush, Glen Powell. He’s not a big enough, established movie star to come that casual-cool [with] scruff and wear sunglasses on the carpet. You haven’t earned that. You’re not Brad Pitt.”

Seth Rogen

“The one who has done a full 180 [is] Seth Rogen. He was so classic that he wore studs! He used to always be one of my worst, and now he’s consistently one of my best.”
