A raid announced on Sunday targeted an alleged extortion cell in the resort city, still under a US “Do Not Travel” warning.
Mexican federal and state forces arrested a 30-year-old man in Acapulco, the security ministry said on Sunday, 11 October. Officials say he chose the gunmen who attacked federal agents in the city in October 2025.
Acapulco was long a favourite beach destination for US travellers. The US State Department’s advisory places Guerrero state, including Acapulco, in its “Do Not Travel” category because of crime.
The Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) identified the man only as Eliceo “N”. One alleged member of his group died when agents came under fire during the operation, the ministry said.
How the Acapulco Arrest Unfolded
Navy and SSPC personnel carried out the arrest with Guerrero’s state security ministry, according to the SSPC statement. Agents tracked the suspect’s location and movements before moving in.
They found and detained him in the Magallanes neighbourhood of Acapulco, the statement said. During the operation, the agents “repelled an armed attack,” and one presumed member of the criminal organisation was killed.
The ministry said agents seized a long gun, a handgun, two magazines and cartridges. They also took 300 doses of methamphetamine, a mobile phone and a vehicle.
The suspect was handed to the federal public prosecutor, who will decide his legal situation. The ministry said he already faced an arrest warrant for homicide.

The 2025 Attack on Federal Agents
The case goes back to October 2025, when gunmen attacked SSPC agents working against extortion in Acapulco. Investigators identified Eliceo “N” as one of those who selected the attackers, the ministry said.
The ministry also accuses him of extorting merchants at Acapulco’s Mercado Central, the city’s main market. It links him to homicides and attacks on transport workers.
With this arrest, seven people are now in custody over the 2025 attack, the SSPC said. The ministry described his cell as tied to a “violence-generating” criminal group but did not name it.
The newspaper La Jornada, citing federal sources, said the suspect is known as “El Junior”. It linked his cell to a local gang called Los Rusos.
Security chief Omar García Harfuch announced the arrest on social media, La Jornada reported. “Attacks against our colleagues will not go unpunished,” he wrote, according to the paper.
What It Means for You
US government employees may not travel to any part of Guerrero, including the tourist areas of Acapulco, under the State Department advisory. Private US visitors are urged not to go.
Extortion of shops and transport operators is a major pressure on daily life in Acapulco. Arrests of cell leaders matter for anyone with business, family or property in the city.
Methamphetamine seizures also feed into the wider US-Mexico security agenda. Washington presses Mexico to act against synthetic drugs and the groups that sell them.
What Is Not Known
The SSPC did not say when exactly the arrest took place or name the person killed. It gave no details on whether any agents were wounded.
The ministry also did not name the criminal group. The link to Los Rusos and the alias “El Junior” come from La Jornada’s sources, not the official statement.
What Comes Next
The federal prosecutor will decide whether to bring charges and seek pre-trial detention. Mexican law requires the suspect to be brought before a judge within set deadlines.
The SSPC said the security cabinet will keep coordinating with Guerrero authorities against extortion and other high-impact crimes.
