When he took the oath of office last January, Mayor Mamdani pledged that his administration would serve everyone in Gotham, without fear or favor.
As he put it at a frigid City Hall, “If you are a New Yorker, I am your mayor. Regardless of whether we agree, I will protect you, celebrate with you, mourn alongside you and never, not for a second, hide from you.”
These days, the sweeping pledge sounds like a bad joke — or a bald-faced lie.
Mamdani’s dismal performance has been a painful wake-up call to those who foolishly believed and trusted him.
But the extent to which his dangerously radical beliefs take precedence over his pledge was never more obvious than last week.
Two shocking incidents demonstrated that his allegiance is reserved for his warped ideology, and everyone and everything else can go to hell.
First, he demonstrated that his hatred for Israel has metastasized into a cancer that makes him unfit for his job.
No mayor in modern history has singled out one group of New Yorkers the way Mamdani has targeted Jews.
On top of his relentless condemnation of Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he is the first mayor in six decades to boycott the Salute to Israel parade.
Still, he had an opportunity on Oct. 7, the third anniversary of the Hamas terrorist invasion, to prove he could rise above personal prejudices to be a mayor for all New Yorkers.
Instead, he chose to deliver heartless remarks that flipped facts and truth on their heads.
With an outrageous effort to depict all Palestinians as victims of an Israeli “genocide,” Mamdani made it clear he has no desire to build bridges to those who don’t agree with him.
His statement was an unsubtle declaration that his duties always will take a back seat to his radical agenda’s battering ram.
Signs of that have been apparent ever since he entered the mayoral race, but coming late in his first year in office, his Oct. 7 statement amounts to a “burn the boats” moment.
He boarded up the exits and left himself no wiggle room for compromise or decency.
Instead, he made it cruelly clear he has no intention of changing his tone.
He has learned nothing from history.
Gotham’s best mayors proved their mettle under fire and earned widespread gratitude by putting their obligations first, and their politics and personal prejudices second.
In Mamdani’s case, it is now certain he intends to fight the lone Jewish state and its New York supporters with every tool at his disposal.
That conclusion is the only one that makes sense given his atrocious statement marking the deadliest day for Jews since the end of the Holocaust.
Anti-Israel speech
He noted the scope of the slaughter in a perfunctory single paragraph, saying the anniversary “marks three years since the horrific war crimes of October 7. On that day, Hamas killed more than 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 others. We grieve alongside our many friends and neighbors who still carry that unthinkable loss.”
From there, the entire speech was an acid attack on Israel.
He blasted the Israeli government’s “devastating, ongoing genocide in Gaza, in which it has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians — including more than 21,000 children.”
The numbers are from the Gazan health ministry, which is controlled by Hamas.
The masters of terror also would have applauded the remainder of his statement.
“Even since the so-called cease-fire, more than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed,” he claimed, again using Hamas’ numbers.
He went on to exhibit his ignorance by accusing Israel of bombing “ambulances waiting outside hospitals,” of “targeting” residential buildings and journalists and of turning away shipments of food aid.
From there, it was pure domestic politics, saying “our tax dollars fund these war crimes” and that “we must refuse to accept a world in which occupation and apartheid continue, where war crimes are met with impunity, and our federal government continues its complicity with every arms shipment.”
Shamefully, no prominent officials from Albany or the five boroughs rose to denounce his attack on our embattled ally.
The job was left to Israel’s UN ambassador, Danny Danon, who compared the mayor’s bid to make Hamas the victim to “turning September 11 into a day of mourning for al-Qaeda terrorists.”
Wrong side again Writing on X, Danon defined “ ‘Mamdani-ism’ as “an attempt to hijack the anniversary of October 7 and turn it into yet another propaganda attack against Israel.”
The second extremely troubling incident last week came when the mayor took the side of an illegal immigrant with a criminal record who recklessly tried to escape from immigration agents in The Bronx.
Agents wounded him as he tried to flee in his car with his 5-year-old son in the backseat.
In a late-night news conference, Mamdani said he spoke to President Trump and told him the city wants all ICE agents out.
“All they do is terrorize this city,” the mayor said of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.
He accused the agency of acting “with impunity” and spreading “chaos and terror” across the country.
“Today’s shooting is only further devastating confirmation of what we have long known,” the mayor said publicly, that “ICE is rotten to its core.”
Bull.
ICE agents risk their lives to protect the public from dangerous thugs.
It’s Mamdani’s policy that is rotten to the core.
The Post reports that the Dominican man in the current case, Oscar Belgal, 28, probably entered America illegally in 2022 under Joe Biden’s open-border policy.
He is suspected of carrying out an armed robbery a year later, of selling dangerous drugs and of being connected to the Trinitarios, a violent street gang.
This is the sort of “New Yorker” Mamdani wants to celebrate and defend.
Markwayne Mullin, secretary of Homeland Security, put the blame on New York’s sanctuary laws, which largely ban local cooperation with the feds.
He said those policies prevented agents from catching Belgal earlier and created the dangerous confrontation that unfolded in The Bronx.
“Sanctuary politicians create an environment for criminal activity to thrive, not for American citizens to be safe,” he said.
“When you have sanctuary cities and politicians, you endanger the safety of the public.”
That message is also lost on Gov. Hochul, who again showed she will never criticize Mamdani, lest she turn off his supporters in her desperate re-election campaign.
She said on X that she also spoke to Trump and Mullin, huffing and puffing that “I expressed outrage on behalf of New Yorkers and urged them to halt ICE enforcement operations in New York.”
Imagine that — she also claims to speak for all New Yorkers when she is defending a criminal illegal alien.
If there were any doubt, we know for certain whose side Hochul and Mamdani are on.
