Former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama sat down with “Good Morning America” co-anchor Robin Roberts for an ABC News special released Thursday.

“One word to describe your next chapter. One word,” Roberts asked the couple during a “lightning round” of questions. (RELATED: ‘Genuine Tension’: Obamas Blame Marital Problems On Trump)

“Fun,” said Barack Obama.

“Uh, me,” Michelle Obama said.

“That’s what you call drop the mic,” Roberts said approvingly, as Michelle Obama laughed.

“You know what, you seem to be grading her higher on her answer,” Barack Obama told Roberts.

Michelle Obama’s answer was honest, if narcissistic. The former first lady has spent much of her post-White House career whining about her husband and her public image.

This, despite the fawning media coverage Michelle Obama received while Barack Obama was in office.

Michelle Obama explained on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast in January that she was reduced to the role of “just Barack Obama’s wife” while her husband was president, rendering her former accomplishments invisible.

I went to Princeton and Harvard,” Michelle Obama said. “I mean, I practiced law. I was an assistant to the mayor in Chicago. I ran a nonprofit, a 501(c)(3) … I was a vice president for community relations at the University of Chicago Hospitals. I was a dean of students.”

Michelle Obama claimed her accolades “just disappeared in the course of this whole election,” and that her shoes became the “most important thing about me.”

In the same podcast appearance, Michelle Obama advised women not to “get off” their career track to have children, because “kids grow up fast. And then they’re gone. You’ve sacrificed everything. And you know, when they leave, they leave. They close the door and act like you never sacrificed.”

Michelle Obama remarked on an episode of her podcast focusing on “women’s health” that “Women’s reproductive health is about our life. It’s about this whole complicated reproductive system that the least of what it does is produce life.”

If a listener didn’t know any better, they might think Michelle Obama is not overly pleased by the role of “mother” and “wife.”

Michelle Obama has previously complained about the difficulty of raising her daughters in the White House. (RELATED: Michelle Obama Appears Relieved She Didn’t Have A Son Because ‘He Would Have Been A Barack Obama’)

“As the first black potential president, we knew there would be death threats … how would we afford it? Because it’s expensive to live in the White House, as many people don’t know,” she said in a May 2025 interview. Michelle Obama added that the family had to pay for “every bit of food” that they ate, along with travel expenses when she and her daughters did not travel with the president.
