The Middle East is on the brink of a “full-fledged” war, the EU foreign affairs chief has said, as clashes between Israel and Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah continued overnight.

Israeli strikes on Lebanon killed more than 490 people on Monday, including more than 90 women and children, in the deadliest barrage since the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war.

“I can say we are almost in a full-fledged war,” EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell said, ahead of a gathering of world leaders at the United Nations on Monday.

“We’re seeing more military strikes, more damage, more collateral damage, more victims.”

Pressing for a solution in New York, he added: “Everybody has to put all their capacity to stop this.”

The Israeli military has warned residents in southern and eastern Lebanon to evacuate ahead of its widening air campaign against Hezbollah.

“Please get out of harm’s way now,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a recorded message.

“Once our operation is finished, you can come back safely to your homes.”
