Minecraft Java came out way back in 2009, and it’s officially had its first major system update, meaning you’ll need to check the minimum and recommended system requirements before playing.
There’s been a ton of firsts for Minecraft recently, between its transition to Game Drops rather than regular updates, a major visuals overhaul for the game’s Bedrock version (Java to come “in the future), and most recently, the ability to finally sit down.
Well, it hasn’t stopped there. For the first time in 17 years, Minecraft Java’s minimum and recommended system requirements have increased, with Mojang revealing that “Java Edition needs room to keep growing” due to the “new features, technical improvements, and more.”
Naturally, this means if you’re running the game on an older device, you may need to check if your PC or laptop can actually handle the game before diving into your favorite seed.
New minimum & recommended Minecraft Java system requirements
OS | Windows 10 64-bit / Windows on ARM / macOS 12+ / Linux 64-bit | Windows 11 64-bit / macOS 14+ / or Linux 64-bit |
Memory | 8 GB (with discrete GPU) / 12 GB (with integrated GPU) | 16 GB |
CPU | Intel Core i3-10100 / AMD Ryzen 3 3100 / Qualcomm Snapdragon X / Apple M1 | Intel Core i5-12400 / AMD Ryzen 5 5600 / Apple M2 Pro |
GPU | NVIDIA GTX 950 / AMD Radeon RX 460/ Intel Arc A310 (discrete), Intel i5-6400 (integrated iGPU) / Apple M1 | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 / AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT / Intel Arc A580 / Apple M2 Pro |
It’s worth noting that according to Mojang, “The updated minimum target is 1080p at 30 FPS on Fast settings” and “The updated recommended target is 1080p at 60 FPS on Fancy settings.” So, they can be slightly adjusted depending on the quality and smoothness you’re looking for.
They also explained that “While older devices may still launch the game, they will struggle to deliver a good experience. This can lead to low frame rates, visual issues, long loading times, or performance that doesn’t match what players expect.”
Of course, the new system requirements aren’t exactly extensive and still come in extremely low compared to any AAA game, so most shouldn’t have an issue running the adventure at 1080p without lag.
With the new system requirements, the devs have promised to improve the edition for players, writing: “By setting clearer recommendations, we can focus on making Java Edition better for our players,” so it remains to be seen whether we’ll be getting any exciting updates outside the upcoming Game Drops for Minecraft Java Edition.
