CV NEWS FEED // A fire that broke out early on November 20 at St. Junípero Serra High School in Gardena, California, damaged the school’s football field bleachers and press box but spared a paperback Catholic Youth Bible inside the press box.
Dr. John Moran, the school’s president, expressed amazement at the Bible’s survival, telling Angelus News, “We’re seeing it as a miracle.”
The fire, reported by a 911 caller around 5:30 a.m., destroyed parts of the press box, bleachers, and several nearby utility rooms, Angelus reported. Firefighters quickly responded, and no injuries were reported.
Answering why there was a Bible in the press box, Moran said the Catholic school has Bibles “all over the school.”
Moran expressed gratitude that the fire occurred after the football season ended and before students arrived on campus.
“We thank God that the timing was not worse,” said Moran, later affirming that the school would continue to live up to its motto, Siempre adelante—always forward, a guiding principle of St. Junípero Serra.
Repairs are necessary, but the football field will remain open for all scheduled practices and events.
