A modder is rebuilding Dark Souls inside The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, with a playable demo already letting Link escape the Undead Asylum and explore Firelink Shrine.

Created by Artholos, Twilight Souls is a total conversion built on Dusklight, the unofficial PC version of GameCube’s Twilight Princess. The project brings Lordran into Zelda’s engine, with Link taking the role of the Chosen Undead.

The full recreation remains a work in progress, but the free demo offers the opening stretch of the adventure, complete with character stats, equipment, and bonfire leveling.

According to the project page, players begin by creating a save and selecting “Lordran Adventure.” Link then starts in the Undead Asylum and must fight his way out to Firelink Shrine.

Players can also return to the Asylum to fight Black Knights and the Stray Demon. Equipment options include Link’s outfits and the Elite Knight armor, while leveling affects weapon attack ratings through strength and dexterity.

Artholos says the recreation also incorporates quality-of-life changes from Dark Souls 3 and Elden Ring, including an expanded inventory.

The download itself contains no game files or assets from either Twilight Princess or Dark Souls. Instead, its installer builds the playable conversion on the user’s computer using content from their own copies of both games.

That means players need the GameCube version of Twilight Princess and the Steam version of Dark Souls Remastered. The Wii release and Prepare to Die Edition are unsupported, and Artholos estimates installation takes two to four hours.

The project also includes custom work, with contributor IveBenGamin creating models and textures for Link’s armor and hollowed appearance.

Beyond the demo, Artholos plans to build the rest of the game in stages. Upcoming playtests would cover the full map, a playable route through Undead Burg, and multiplayer cooperation and invasions. Those tests do not yet have scheduled dates.

The crossover follows other ambitious mod projects, including Minecraft recreated inside Elden Ring and Minecraft appearing inside GTA 5 on an iPhone.
