Although Modern Warfare 4 doesn’t arrive until later this year, Infinity Ward has already been forced to respond to concerns about the amount of visual recoil.
Despite the official reveal back in May and a first look at DMZ the following month, we still had very little actual footage of MW4 in action. That all changed on July 15, when the devs showed off the Kill Block map, alongside an episode of From the Ward that featured plenty of gameplay snippets.
Although many praised the visuals, others were immediately concerned by the amount of visual recoil seen on the weapons as they fired, which was also a major complaint during Infinity Ward’s last game –Modern Warfare 2.
“Infinity ward y’all have to get rid of the horrible gun shake and VISUAL RECOIL,” said one fan on X. “If y’all want people to enjoy the game to me it’s really a simple fix just tone it down A LOT.”
“I thought we were done with the visual recoil nonsense?” said another.
MW4 devs using beta to assess visual recoil
Following the criticism, the devs replied to one fan explaining that they’ve seen discussions and plan to use the beta as an opportunity to assess the situation.
“We’ve seen the early conversations around visual recoil,” IW said in the post. “The Beta will give players a chance to get hands-on, and we’ll be monitoring feedback closely throughout both weekends.”

Although this isn’t confirmation of a nerf to visual recoil, it suggests that they are open to making changes if the feeling is still strong after the community gets their hands on the game for the first time.
However, news account Modern Warzone urged the devs not to wait for the beta before taking action.
“Hope it’s reduced by 50% when beta starts compared to the gameplay we’ve already seen,” he said. “Don’t think that’s a change we should have to wait until the beta to see, everyone who has seen gameplay has asked for the same thing basically.”

There is currently no official start date for the Modern Warfare 4 beta, but it’s set to feature a small selection of maps and weapons to try out before the full launch on October 23.
