Moldovan President Maia Sandu faced an unexpected setback as a referendum on joining the European Union was approved by a slim margin, defying polls showing a consistent majority in the former Soviet republic backing accession.

Voters approved the EU accession vote with a 50.2% majority, according to preliminary results tallied by the Central Electoral Commission in Chisinau Monday.
