A California mom has been hit with a murder charge almost a year after police found her in the bath holding the body of her two-year-old son.
Melissa Lynn Beisel, 41, was arrested on June 4 for murder and assault on a child in connection with the death of her son, Aidan, who died on September 22, 2025, according to the Orange County District Attorney's Office.
The Placentia Police Department responded to Beisel's home in Orange County after Aidan's father found her in the bathtub with their dead son.
Officers found Beisel with 'superficial stab wounds to her neck and arms,' and she was taken to the hospital.
Authorities initially investigated the boy's death as a drowning. However, further investigation ruled that out, and detectives declared it a homicide.
Beisel had told responding officers that she was giving the child a bath in the walk-in shower using a plastic storage bin before he drowned, police said at the time.
She said she left the bathroom to grab soap for about two minutes and found him unresponsive in the bin with his face down when she returned.
Beisel claimed that she had given Aidan CPR and then harmed herself with a sharp object when he would not wake up.
Police responded to a 911 call at a residence in Placentia on September 22, 2025, when they made the gruesome discovery of the child's death
A neighbor told local news at the time that Melissa Lynn Beisel had lived in the back house on a property with five children and their father
Police said that she stayed in the shower with the boy for about six hours before Aidan's father found her and called 911.
She was then taken into custody, facing charges of involuntary manslaughter and child abuse, causing great bodily injury.
Beisel was later released and moved to Coarsegold, which is about five hours north of the home where her son died in Placentia.
The District Attorney's Office is now pursuing harsher charges of felony murder and felony assault on a child resulting in death.
Lieutenant Joe Connell previously told the Orange County Register that Beisel was living in a back house with five children and their father when Aidan died.
He said the children were elementary-aged to mid-teens. The two-year-old was the youngest living in the home.
Molly Ortiz, the family's neighbor who lived in the front house on the property, told the Orange County Register that she saw the boy after the tragedy.
She recalled seeing him unconscious, but had not learned of his death until the next day when she read the news.
A neighbor described the family as 'loving' and 'normal,' noting that she frequently saw the children playing outside with their father
Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer promised to pursue justice to the 'fullest extent' for Aidan and all those who loved the child
Ortiz added that she observed a social worker from Child Protective Services visiting the home several months before Aidan's death.
She said that she rarely saw Beisel but frequently saw the siblings playing outside with their father, describing the family as 'loving' and 'normal.'
The identity of the children's father has not been released. Public records do not indicate that Beisel was ever married.
'A mother is a child's first protector,' Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said.
'For a mother to use the very arms that are meant to shield her child from harm to instead physically extinguish the life of a child she created is a depravity which we will never be able to fully comprehend.
'The death of a child is a grief that can never be explained and a grief that can never be healed,' he continued.
Spitzer added that authorities were 'heartbroken over the death of little Aidan' and would pursue justice to the 'fullest extent' for everyone who loved him.
Beisel is currently being held without bail in the Orange County Jail. She is scheduled to appear in court on June 30 for her arraignment and bail review.
The Daily Mail has reached out to Beisel's public defender for comment.
