More than 120,000 retro-style refrigerators sold at Home Depot and Amazon have been urgently recalled after dozens of fires – including one that proved fatal.
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of around 121,680 Galanz Retro Refrigerators, warning that an electrical fault inside the appliances can cause them to short circuit and catch fire.
Officials say they are aware of 34 reported fires linked to the refrigerators, one of which resulted in a death, according to a local fire department report.
Consumers are being urged to unplug the refrigerators immediately and stop using them until they have been repaired.
The recalled refrigerators were sold nationwide at Home Depot stores and online through Amazon between January 2019 and September 2022 for between $330 and $520.
The affected appliances are Galanz's retro-style refrigerators, available in black, blue, red and white, with a capacity of 7.6 cubic feet.
They measure around 58 inches high, 24 inches deep and 21 inches wide and feature a separate top freezer compartment, adjustable glass shelves and a drawer.
Only refrigerators manufactured between December 2018 and December 2020 are included in the recall.

The recall affects refrigerators with the following model numbers: BCD-215V-62H, GLR76TRDER, GLR76TBKER, GLR76TBEER and GLR76TWEER.
Owners can check whether their appliance is affected by looking for a white label on the upper left-hand corner of the back of the refrigerator.
The label displays the model number along with a six-digit date code in YYYYMM format.
According to the CPSC, the refrigerators' internal electrical components can short circuit and ignite, posing a risk of serious injury or death from fire and burn hazards.
The recall involves refrigerators manufactured in China by Zhongshan Galanz and imported into the US by Galanz Americas and Home Depot.
Consumers who own one of the recalled models should unplug it immediately and contact Galanz to arrange a free in-home repair by a qualified technician.

It comes amid growing scrutiny of household appliances after a string of high-profile safety alerts over the past year.

In June, more than a million power banks were recalled over fears their lithium-ion batteries could overheat and catch fire, while several ranges of air fryers, pressure cookers and electric ranges have also been pulled from sale in recent years because of burn or fire hazards.
The dangers of electrical faults have also been highlighted by accidents involving industrial automation. In 2023, a robotics technician in South Korea died after being crushed by an industrial robot at a produce distribution center while inspecting the machine's sensors.
Investigators said the robot apparently failed to distinguish the worker from a box of vegetables it was programmed to handle.
The incident involved factory equipment rather than a household appliance, but it underscored the potentially devastating consequences of equipment malfunctions.
