Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced that he and the attorneys general of two other states issued a subpoena to Dr. Anthony Fauci on Wednesday to determine whether the doctor who informed the White House’s COVID-19 policy had received financial and other benefits for his work.
The subpoena calls for information regarding awards Fauci had received or was considered for, grants he had been awarded, professional opportunities offered to him, financial incentives he had considered for himself, and communications with the media and businesses he may have made, an announcement from Uthmeier’s office said. The office clarified the scope of the subpoena as part of a civil inquiry, saying it is seeking information between Jan. 3, 2020, and the end of August 2026 that is related to COVID-19 and his activities within the state of Florida.
The subpoena also requests documents on topics including the efficacy of vaccines and boosters, natural immunity, potential adverse effects, messaging strategies, and communications with vaccine manufacturers, the statement said.
“Government officials have a certain level of immunity in their official capacities, but if Fauci personally profited off the ‘guidance’ he issued, that very well could have broken Florida law,” Uthmeier said in the announcement. “Fauci’s diary focused more on self-promotion than the legitimate safety concerns from the mRNA vaccines. While Fauci was pushing for book deals, awards, and fortune and fame, Floridians were being deceived and harmed by his misrepresentations.”
West Virginia Attorney General John McCuskey and Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill also joined the subpoena, calling for transparency while emphasizing that this is a national issue.
“What we know already is Fauci lied — we just don’t know yet how much,” Murrill said. “The truth will come out.”
This comes just a week after Uthmeier, who Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed as the state’s attorney general in February 2025, announced a state probe into Fauci, saying that it is “past time we get the truth of what happened during COVID.”

His statement coincided with a Senate hearing in which Fauci responded to each question by pleading the Fifth Amendment, and after Fauci’s personal journal was released by Republican Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, showing that he had been focused heavily on his image and reputation.
Uthmeier’s office said entries in the diary detail that Fauci was granted substantial awards, including a $900,000 Dan David Foundation prize and a National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) research grant to the University of Florida Scripps Biomedical Research program. The office further said opportunities for named professorships, book deals, board positions, private foundation partnerships, and other benefits were offered to Fauci for his federal role that impacted the state of Florida.
