The mosque, a marvel of North African architecture with hand-carved domes and arches, was undergoing restoration when the quake struck, leaving it in ruins. Despite the destruction, residents of Tinmel see the mosque as a symbol of their heritage and a source of income in an area long neglected by the government and suffering from high unemployment. Consequently, they are eager to rebuild it, alongside their homes. Meanwhile, Morocco’s government has pledged to rebuild the mosque, with support from local and international experts. It has also promised to improve the infrastructure and public services of the town, as well as that of other regions affected by the earthquake.
