Beyond Hollywood glitz, Los Angeles now has another crown. It has become the most mosquito infested city in the US.
A deadly combination of record-shattering heatwaves and El Niño threats has turned Southern California into a breeding paradise for the winged pests.
Fed-up residents are reporting a year of agony as clouds of bugs terrorize backyards and turn al fresco dining into an ankle-chewing nightmare.
“I’ve been here my whole life and the amount of mosquitoes I’ve seen this summer has been insane,” a TikTok user posted on her profile and the post garnered most than 21,000 likes.
She added she can’t even go to her backyard because of the bloodsuckers. “You can’t even sit in your car with the windows down. They’re infested everywhere,” she said.
Truman Hedding, who lives in El Segundo, said he spends her night chasing and smacking mosquitos with an electric racquet.
“Our kids have been covered head to toe in mosquito bites…It’s an absolute nightmare. We invest a lot of money to live in a beautiful town like El Segundo. The last thing we want is to stay up all night fighting mosquitoes,” Hedding told Fox 11.
Los Angeles County has recorded over 180 cases of West Nile virus this year—the highest spike in nearly a decade, according to the local public health department.
The region’s native ‘Culex’ mosquito picks up West Nile from wild birds before passing it on to humans. In nearby Orange County, vector control officials have pulled a staggering 850 traps loaded with West Nile-positive bugs, reports the Guardian.
Even worse are the hyper-aggressive invasive species known as ‘Aedes’ mosquitoes which are also known as “ankle-biters” because they specifically target human legs and bite multiple times in one go.
