Rep. Brandon Gill says Rep. Ilhan Omar’s reaction to him goes well beyond a dirty look, recalling an episode in which she allegedly screamed and called him names while he spoke on the House floor. The Texas Republican shared the account during an interview about his proposal to halt Somali immigration for 25 years. Asked whether Omar gives him the “stink eye,” Gill answered that it is “much worse than that.” He described what he said happened during a speech about the legislation.
Gill was speaking with BlazeTV host Sara Gonzales on “Sara Gonzales Unfiltered,” where their conversation turned to the Somalia Immigration Moratorium Act. His proposal would impose a lengthy pause on immigration involving Somali nationals. Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, came up when Gonzales asked about the reception Gill gets from his colleague. The question prompted him to recount her alleged response inside the House chamber.
“I just want to know, like, does Ilhan Omar give you the stink eye whenever she sees you?” Gonzales asked. Gill replied, “Usually it’s much worse than that.” He continued: “I was giving a speech on the House floor about this bill in particular, and she was in the audience and she was screaming.” As Blaze Media reported in its account of the interview, Gill said he struggled to make out Omar’s words. “I could barely hear what she was saying, but she was screaming, you know, calling me names and all kinds of stuff,” he said. “You’re kidding,” Gonzales responded. Gill added: “She’s not a big fan of me, I will say to say the least.”
Gill introduced H.R. 7359 on February 4th, 2026, according to the published bill text. The measure was referred to the House Judiciary Committee and proposes a 25-year restriction on visas and immigration status for Somali nationals. Its exceptions include lawful permanent residents, people lawfully admitted before enactment, and specified diplomatic or international organization visa holders. Gill described the proposed duration as “truly a moderate response to a severe problem.”
“This is not banning it completely, which I think would be justified candidly, but a 25-year moratorium to simply say we brought in a lot of people from all over the world,” Gill said. He argued that immigration policy should leave time for newcomers to assimilate. “Why don’t we allow them to assimilate to come into our culture and our society can cohere a little bit?” he asked. “And that hasn’t happened for far too long.”

Gill pointed to Minnesota and argued that public benefit spending was a reason to impose the restriction. He cited a 78% welfare-use figure for Somali immigrant households in Minnesota after 10 or more years in the United States. He called that “so deeply insulting to Americans who are paying for this stuff.” Describing the complaint he attributed to taxpayers, Gill said: “Yet you’re making us pay for your housing and your health care and your education and everything else.”
He went on to argue that lawmakers should respond to Americans who oppose continued large-scale Somali immigration. Gill characterized their message as: “I don’t want mass Somali immigration. That doesn’t make our country stronger.” He criticized Somalia’s social organization, saying, “Somalia has a clan-based social structure that’s totally different than than what we have in the United States.” Gill linked that structure to fraud in Minnesota, presenting it as another argument for his proposal.
Gill closed by saying immigration decisions should begin with the interests of Americans already living in the country. “So again, this this goes back to let’s protect our own people first, and let’s make sure that America continues to be the envy of the world that everybody wants to come to,” he said. He finished with a warning: “But it will not be if you allow unlimited immigration from from cultures and societies that are third world and that are that are incompatible with our own.”
