The body of longtime Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was recovered intact Sunday from the site of an Israeli airstrike, according to multiple reports.

Israeli Channel 12 reported in Hebrew that Nasrallah “suffocated in agony” from poisonous gases that entered into his underground bunker, which lacked a proper ventilation system.

A medical and a security source told Reuters that Nasrallah’s body had no direct wounds to it and that his death may have been caused by blunt trauma from the blast. (RELATED: Lloyd Austin Orders Military To Stay On Alert As Israel-Hezbollah Conflict Heats Up)

The Israelis discharged 80 tons of specially designed bunker-busting munitions to blast through the compound. Nasrallah was the leader of Hezbollah since the assassination of his predecessor by the Israelis in 1992, The Associated Press (AP) reported. He led the organization through Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000 and a war with Israel in 2006.

Lebanon 24 shared footage on social media that they claimed in Arabic to be the recovery of Nasrallah from the blast site.

The footage shows a body covered in a white shroud being pulled up mechanically from the deep blast.

Nasrallah met his end Friday when Israeli jets bombarded Hezbollah’s central headquarters in Beirut. Emanuel Fabian, a Times of Israel military correspondent, shared footage of the strike on the compound.

“The terrorists were in Hezbollah’s central headquarters, located in the heart of Beirut, embedded beneath civilian buildings. This unequivocally proves that Hezbollah hides among civilians, endangering the lives of the people of Lebanon,” the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced.

Hezbollah’s most recent conflict with Israel was ignited when the organization started firing explosive projectiles Oct. 8 into Israel out of solidarity with Hamas. The cross-border exchanges between Hezbollah and Israel has led to fears of a wider war breaking out.
