Apparently, they were friends and exchanged cell phones for some reason. The sheriff typed in his daughter's number and was enraged when finding it was already on the judge's phone. Sheriff's lawyers are pleading temporary insanity, which can reduce murder to manslaughter in Kentucky, in cases like husband finds his wife in bed with someone.

A sheriff's deputy was sentenced to prison for sex for freedom, which was done in that judge's chambers. Both the judge and sheriff may be implicated in that scandal. Of course similar things go on a lot of places. Not clear if that scandal is related to the murder.
