A swimming champion accused of beating a security guard to death in Hawaii with a giant water bottle while naked had stopped attending the school last year, officials confirmed.
Legend Storer, 20, has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, first-degree burglary and indecent exposure charges stemming from the bizarre Maui attack.
Concordia University Irvine confirmed Monday Storer attended the private Orange County school and competed on its men’s swim team.
But after the university ended its men’s swimming program in May 2025, Storer did not return as a student, the Orange County Register reported.
“After Concordia discontinued the Men’s Swim program in May 2025, Legend did not return as a student,” Ann Ashmon, the school’s associate vice president of strategic communications, told the paper.
Storer is accused of breaking into a condominium complex office in Kahana, Maui, at around 1:45 a.m. Aug. 5, according to police and prosecutors.
Inside, 63-year-old security guard Michael Dyer was on a break when the alleged attack unfolded.
Police say surveillance footage captured Storer attacking Dyer with a five-gallon water bottle. Dyer was later found unresponsive at the complex and pronounced dead.
More than an hour after the alleged killing, police received reports of a naked man wandering around the neighborhood.
Officers found Storer about 30 minutes later suffering from multiple abrasions and took him to a hospital for evaluation.
Investigators later determined, after reviewing surveillance footage, that the man taken to the hospital was allegedly the same person seen attacking Dyer.
Dyer’s family described him as a devoted husband.
“Mike was a family man and very devoted to his wife, Joy. Our family is in the process of setting up a GoFundMe to help with this sudden and tragic event,” his relatives said in a statement to Hawaii News Now.
Storer previously attended Maui Preparatory Academy and competed for the Lahaina Swim Club. At Maui Prep, he was a two-time Maui Interscholastic League champion, according to his former university profile.
He is now being held in Maui jail without bail.
Because Dyer was 63, prosecutors have classified Storer as an alleged “offender against the elderly,” potentially exposing him to a tougher sentence if convicted.
Storer’s attorney declined to comment when contacted by the Register. His mother hung up when approached by a reporter, while his father did not respond.
