A golf-loving pensioner from Newcastle has secured a £500,000 prize after deciding to abandon his regular lottery selections in favour of a randomly generated ticket.

The Thunderball victor successfully matched all five principal numbers plus the bonus ball in the September 2 draw, claiming the top prize.

The winner typically selected digits that held personal significance for him. However, on this particular occasion, he chose to purchase a lucky dip entry instead.

This spontaneous deviation from his usual approach proved remarkably fortunate, delivering him half a million pounds from a single randomly generated line.

Reflecting on the windfall, the fortunate player expressed astonishment at his success.

"We just couldn't believe we had won from putting on a one-off lucky dip line," he said. "It shows that anyone can be lucky. We are so grateful to have the opportunity to leave a legacy for our children, and we are also planning some holiday and more rounds of golf."

Abbie Suddick, Winners' Advisor at Allwyn, operator of the National Lottery, congratulated the winner, saying: "What tee-riffic news for our Newcastle winner. We hope he enjoys plenty of holiday adventures, and even more rounds of his favourite hobby."

The latest triumph adds to Newcastle's established reputation as a fortunate postcode for lottery success across the nation.

Historical data tracking winners since the lottery's inception in 1994 places the NE postcode area in seventh position nationwide, with a total of 154 millionaires created.

Birmingham leads the national rankings with 234 recorded lottery millionaires, whilst Belfast occupies second place with 202 winners.

These statistics encompass both publicly identified victors and those who elected to maintain their anonymity. The data reflects postcode areas rather than specific postcodes or local authority boundaries.

The year 2026 has witnessed substantial lottery success across the country, with 140 players achieving millionaire status thus far. This equates to approximately one new millionaire emerging every 48 hours.

More than half of these winners secured their fortunes following June's introduction of a revamped Lotto game format. The updated system provides participants with dual winning opportunities from a single ticket.

Organisers anticipate this modification will result in double the annual number of newly minted Lotto millionaires going forward.

Beyond individual winners, lottery participation generates approximately £33m each week for National Lottery-supported initiatives.

Since the lottery commenced operations, more than £53billion has been raised for Good Causes, funding hundreds of schemes in every postcode area throughout the UK.
