Netflix has unveiled three new Nordic originals as part of its 2025 slate, including the Swedish crime series “Synden,” the Danish fertility dramedy “Sult,” and season 3 of Norwegian romantic comedy series “Home for Christmas,” confirming its ambition to keep investing in Scandinavian content.
The Nordic market has gone through a rough patch in the last few years after the fallout of negotiations between the Danish producers guild and streamers; and the major restructuring at Viaplay which has put the brakes on local originals and is now partly owned by France’s Canal+.
All three Nordic originals greenlighted by Netflix are backed by renowned creatives and producers.
“Synden” is written and directed by Peter Grönlund whose credits include “Goliat” and “Beartown.” The series follows the perpetually angry, odd but highly intelligent investigator Dani (Krista Kosonen) who is teamed up with newly graduated police colleague Malik (Mohammed Nour Oklah) to investigate the murder of a teenager found dead at a farmhouse on the Bjäre peninsula. The investigation propels Dani and Malik at the center of a dark family feud that has been going on for generations and revolves around Patriarch Elis (Peter Gantman). Kosonen previously starred “The Midwife” and “Beforeigners.”
A contemporary crime thriller series, “Synden” is produced by Bonnie Skoog Feeney and Mattias Arehn at Ninjahuset. Grönlund is executive producing.
“Sulk,” meanwhile, is written and directed by Denmark’s beloved comedy duo, Ditte Hansen and Louise Mieritz (“Ditte & Louise”). It’s produced by Miso Film, the outfit behind “Wallander,” as well as the hit Danish TV series “Those Who Kill,” “Dicte” and “1864.”
Based on Tine Høeg’s 2022 novel, the film follows Mia, a successful writer who meets the love of her life in the charming single father Emil. But their happiness is soon tested when it turns out they cannot conceive naturally and must turn to fertility treatment. Cast includes Rosalinde Mynster, Joachim Fjelstrup, Mille Lehfeldt, Sara Fanta Traore, Magnus Haugaard, Magnus Millang and Sargun Oshana, among others. Jenny Mattesen and Jonas Allen are producing “Sulk.”
Netflix will also bring back the hit heartwarming series “Home for Christmas” for an anticipation third season. Season 2 ended more than three years ago. Ida Elise Broch will return as Johanne, who is now 35 and single, having broken up with her boyfriend Jonas six months prior. She’s keeping busy with family and work, taking on a new leadership position at work, and finally throws herself back into the dating scene.
Directed by Per-Olav Sørensen, the new season is penned by Siri Seljeseth, Amy Deasismont, Vera Herngren, Mari Ørstavik, Per-Olav Sørensen. It’s produced by Mari Nygaard. Executive producers are Nora Ibrahim, Trond H. Kvernstrøm, Per-Olav Sørensen. “Home for Christmas” season 3 is produced by The Oslo Company and The Global Ensemble Drama.
