A new Marvel’s Wolverine trailer dropped late on July 16, revealing more of Insomniac’s PS5 action adventure, including a new villain: Lady Deathstrike.
The cinematic trailer is essentially a big fight montage, showing Wolverine fighting various soldiers around the world as he tries to keep hold of a photo of him and Jean Grey — suggesting the two are, or were, a couple in this game’s universe.
We get another look at Sabretooth in action, and then it cuts to Wolverine fighting The Hand, when a lady with extremely long and sharp fingernails gets the better of him. As the photo of him and Jean burns, his voiceover says: “Who I am, who I was… when that’s gone, there won’t be anything left but rage.”
Long-time X-Men fans may have recognised this new villain as none other than Lady Deathstrike, one of Wolverine’s main rivals.
Who is Lady Deathstrike in Marvel’s Wolverine?
In the comics, Yuriko Oyama, aka Lady Deathstrike, is a cyborg assassin with Adamantium bonded to her skeleton (similar to Wolverine), and instead of fingernails, she has retractable Adamantium claws. Thanks to her cybernetic enhancements, she has superhuman strength, speed, and durability and can even heal quickly in some iterations.
She’s the daughter of Japanese crime lord and scientist Kenji Oyama, who invented the Adamantium-to-bone-bonding process. Seeing Wolverine’s Adamantium skeleton as an insult to her father’s legacy, she’s committed to bringing him down.
We’ve only had a brief glimpse of her in the game, but it appears she’s working alongside The Hand, a group of evil ninjas who also appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Lady Deathstrike previously appeared in 2003’s X2, played by Kelly Hu, and a variant of the same character was briefly seen in 2024’s Deadpool and Wolverine.
In the X-Men movie universe, she’s portrayed as a mutant rather than a cyborg, but it’s not clear which way Insomniac’s version will go.
