Conditions include providing proof of a childless marriage lasting over 10 years, and written permission from a civil servant’s first wife. Critics say it increases the vulnerability of married women.

New rules on polygamy among male civil servants in Jakarta seek to “impose stricter conditions” on the practice, the capital’s acting governor said on Monday (Jan 20) amid criticism that they legitimise and promote such arrangements. Some of the new conditions, issued on Jan 6, include proof of a childless marriage lasting over 10 years, medical proof that the first wife has a physical disability or incurable disease, written permission from the first wife, and court approval to ensure that the civil servant is financially capable of supporting multiple families, according to news outlet Tempo.

An applicant will not be allowed to go ahead with a polygamous marriage if it conflicts with his religious teachings or has the potential to disrupt his official duties. If the civil servant is found to have violated the rules, he will face disciplinary action, Tempo reported.

Acting Governor Teguh Setyabudi also pledged his provincial government would not easily grant the requests of male civil servants who wish to have more than one wife.

Polygamy actually just means having more than one spouse. Polygyny is having more than one wife, specifically.

2 wives = 2 mothers in law.

It’s funny the Muslims copied the exact rules from the Jewish talmud. If you can’t have children with your wife after 10 years, you can divorce her to marry another one.

Not surprising, really. Islam as a whole is a fraud.

I believe it only means having more than one husband. It’s legal in India, Kenya, China, and Nepal. I actually don’t see the unifying principle between those 4.

Polandry is more than one husband. Polygyny is more than one wife. Polygamy is more than one spouse.

South Africa is considering legalizing polyandry.

In the U.S., it is legal among certain tribes, I think the Aleuts are one.

The way 80% of the women chase 10% of the guys, we may get there. However, too many of these decide to marry Uncle Sam.
