The New York Film Critics Circle will host its annual awards gala on Jan. 6, 2026, returning to TAO Downtown.

David Ehrlich, chief film critic for IndieWire, has been named the 2025 chair of the NYFCC, taking over leadership of the country’s oldest critics group. Stephen Garrett will continue as general manager.

The announcement follows the NYFCC’s 90th anniversary celebration earlier this year, which featured an impressive lineup of presenters and honorees, including Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist,” which was awarded best picture by Robert Pattinson and best actor for Adrien Brody by his co-star Guy Pearce. Brody went on to win his second career Oscar for the role (his other win was for “The Pianist”).

Other Oscar overlap winners included supporting actor Kieran Culkin for the dramedy “A Real Pain” and screenplay winner Sean Baker for “Anora,” the story of a sex worker who marries the pampered son of a Russian oligarch, which won five Oscars total, including best picture.

NYFCC members, some of the most prominent critics in the world, including Variety’s chief film critic Owen Gleiberman, will meet in November or December to select the best films and performances of 2025. A date for that meeting will be announced later.

“As the film industry continues to rebound from the various crises that have confronted it over the last few years, and to create exciting new ones along the way, 2025 promises to be a rich and rewarding year for the movies,” Ehrlich said. “I suspect that NYFCC will kick off its 10th decade by celebrating a true embarrassment of riches at our awards dinner next January.”

The NYFCC will also continue its student awards initiative, which supports graduate and undergraduate film criticism and journalism students in the New York metropolitan area. The effort, led by NYFCC member Keith Uhlich, includes financial support and two invitations to the annual dinner.

Founded in 1935, the New York Film Critics Circle comprises critics from newspapers, magazines and digital outlets.
