Pucker up, New York.
The Empire State is the second most superstitious in the nation when it comes to New Year’s Eve rituals — with a midnight smooch the most popular tradition, a new survey found.
The study found that 72% of New Yorkers hold to a superstitious tradition to ring in the New Year, with 28% of those polled saying that they plant a kiss on their significant other — or whomever is convenient at the time, the survey by the online gambling site casino.com revealed.
Some 6,000 Americans were polled for the study, which asked respondents if they held to New Year’s traditions and to rate the various traditions to welcome the year.
Only New Mexico ranked higher than New York.
“Our recent data analysis uncovered insights into how New Year’s Eve rituals are embraced across the country,” the pollsters said in a statement Wednesday.
“As the clock nears midnight, New Yorkers will be engaging in a variety of time-honored traditions—like sharing a midnight kiss, wearing lucky clothing, and keeping a bit of extra cash in their wallets—all in hopes of ushering in a prosperous year ahead.
“Interestingly, 55% of respondents believe these rituals ‘always work,’ which helps explain their continued popularity and the strong desire to keep these traditions alive year after year.”
Aside from the first kiss of the year, 20% of New Yorkers said they wear a lucky color of favorite piece of clothing, 14% said they keep extra cash in their wallets and 13% said they light fireworks.
Others said they keep to age-old superstitions like opening doors and windows when the ball drops, an Irish tradition believed to let out the old year and the new one in, while allowing the spirits of deceased family members to participate in the celebration.
Some celebrants eat 12 grapes — a tradition that originated in Spain — and some fill their cupboards with groceries, with 9% of participants choosing each of those options.
Finally, 5% said they eat black-eyed peas or collard greens which is a southern tradition that is believed to bring good luck in the coming year, and 2% carry an empty suitcase around.
According to a report by Vogue last year, that one is supposed to mean a year of travel ahead.
Wisconsin ranked as one of the least superstitious, with only 24% of locals holding to annual traditions among the states that made the casino.ca list.
Not included on the list is the inevitable amount of bubbly that will no doubt be downed.
