The New York Jets season may already be off to a scary start before a preseason snap even takes place.
Following yet another disastrous season, the Jets arrive in 2026 with little hope outside the idea that tanking for a top draft pick may finally boost their fortunes.
But for Jets fans that want results this season, the news of an injury to their projected starting quarterback is certainly not a welcome sign.
According to NFL Network, quarterback Geno Smith will be out of the Jets' preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers due to foot soreness.
The network's Mike Garafolo maintains that the injury is 'nothing the team is concerned about.'
Garafolo added that 'if this was a regular-season game, he'd be a go. But for now, a cautionary route for the team.'

Smith's injury is reportedly 'nothing the team is concerned about' for the long term
Smith's return to the Jets comes over a decade after he was drafted by the team in 2013.
After being selected in the second round of that year's draft, Smith struggled as a starter in New York and ultimately became a backup.
Smith then bounced around the league to the New York Giants and the Los Angeles Chargers.
Eventually, he went to the Seattle Seahawks and served as a backup to Russell Wilson. When Wilson was traded to the Denver Broncos, Smith became the starter and had a career renaissance.
After a rejuvenating 2022 season, Smith was named a Pro Bowler for the first time and won NFL Comeback Player of the Year. He got his second Pro Bowl nod in 2023.
A middling 2024 season followed before Smith was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders for the draft rights to Jalen Milroe.
Smith was then traded back to the Jets in the offseason, where he's expected to be the starter.
Last year, the Jets had the second-worst record of any team in the league. They missed the playoffs for the 15th straight season, the longest active streak in North American sports.
