Jonathan McKinsey, a 40-year-old tech executive at the New York Times, was allegedly shot dead by his in-laws amid a family feud over him "transitioning", it has emerged.
Mr McKinsey was killed in a car park at a sports complex in Dublin, California, at approximately 3pm on Saturday.
Police arrested his in-laws, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both aged 77, shortly after the shooting.
The pair have been charged with murder in a case that had already shocked America over the suspects' identities.
But bombshell court documents now suggest the killing followed a bitter family feud involving Mr McKinsey, his wife Candice Jang, and her parents, centred in part on McKinsey becoming transgender.
As their 15-year marriage fell apart, Mr McKinsey filed for a restraining order against Ms Jang in December 2025, court records reveal.
The filing contained a series of allegations from both sides.
He claimed she had struck him with a frying pan during an incident in 2013.

He further alleged that she had verbally abused their children and accused Ms Jang's mother of doing the same.
Disputes over the children's clothing were among the couple's worst flashpoints, the court documents say.
The restraining order application formed part of a succession of competing legal filings between the estranged couple.
Mr McKinsey had transitioned from female to male in 2010, a year before marrying Ms Jang.

His restraining order petition alleged that Ms Chen called him a "disgusting queer" and a "pervert" during rows about the children's clothing choices.
Mr McKinsey also accused his wife of hostility towards his transition and trying to remove medical tubes from his body following a procedure related to his change, according to court records.
Separately, Alameda prosecutors charged McKinsey with two counts of misdemeanour child abuse in 2025, court records show.
Ms Jang had told police that her husband struck her six-year-old son in the face with an open hand.

She also informed investigators of a 2018 domestic violence incident in which Mr McKinsey allegedly bruised her left arm.
Officers visiting the family home discovered the couple's two-year-old child alone in an upstairs room while McKinsey was out shopping, a deputy sheriff stated.
McKinsey entered not guilty pleas to both charges and was freed from custody on condition he attend parenting classes.
