We look ahead to Monday’s Premier League game at St James’ Park with our Newcastle United vs West Ham prediction and preview. Two sides in contrasting form lock horns.
Newcastle vs West Ham: The Key Insights
- Newcastle are tipped as clear favourites by the Opta supercomputer, which predicts them triumphing in 58.9% of its 10,000 pre-match simulations.
- Coming into Matchday 12, Newcastle have used fewer players (19) than any other side in the Premier League this season.
- West Ham have failed to score in their last two league games, as many as their previous 14 beforehand.
Newcastle will bid to continue their charge up the Premier League table when they host West Ham at St James’ Park on Monday.
Newcastle have rattled off three straight wins in all competitions after a patchy start to the campaign, leaving them heading into Matchday 12 eighth in the Premier League and just a point off the top four.
Newcastle have won their last two Premier League games, and are looking to win three in a row for the first time since September 2023 – this is the sixth occasion since then they have won twice in a row in the league.
Before this weekend, along with Liverpool, Newcastle are one of two clubs yet to drop a single point from a winning position in the Premier League this season. They have won each of the last 10 matches in which they have led at any point in the Premier League, their longest such run since winning 11 in a row from February to August 2006.
Meanwhile, it’s been a hugely difficult start to the season for West Ham, and new head coach Julen Lopetegui is already under pressure.
Lopetegui’s arrival and a host of new signings had West Ham fans excited for life after David Moyes, but that anticipation has quickly dwindled with the Hammers taking just 12 points from their opening 11 league matches and sitting in 14th before MD 12.
They seemed to be turning a corner when they won two of their three league games in October, but they followed that up with a 3-0 thumping at the hands of Nottingham Forest before a drab 0-0 home draw with Everton last time out.
Only once since the start of last season have they gone three league matches without scoring a goal, doing so in February, but they could match that unwanted run this Monday.
It’s not just in front of goal they’ve had issues, however.
West Ham have kept just two clean sheets in their last 28 Premier League away games, conceding 66 goals (2.4 per game). Indeed, in 2024, they have conceded more away goals in the top flight (35) than any other side.
That type of defensive form will leave Newcastle striker Alexander Isak licking his lips, with the Sweden international having scored in all three of his Premier League games against West Ham, netting a brace in both meetings last term.
No Newcastle player has scored multiple goals in three consecutive Premier League meetings with an opponent before, while no player has ever done so against West Ham either.
Meanwhile, only against Aston Villa (nine) has Harvey Barnes been directly involved in more Premier League goals than he has against West Ham (eight – six goals, two assists). He’s either scored or assisted in each of his last four against West Ham (four goals, one assist), finding the net in each of the last three.
In terms of team news, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe will remain without the likes of Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman at the back, while Callum Wilson is not yet ready to return in attack. Dan Burn will serve a one-game suspension on Monday having picked up five yellow cards.
Lopetegui will be without the suspended Mohammed Kudus and Edson Álvarez, while the game is expected to come too soon for the injured Niclas Füllkrug.
Newcastle vs West Ham Head-to-Head
Newcastle have lost just one of their last 10 Premier League games against West Ham (five wins, four draws) and are unbeaten in all five meetings under Howe.
West Ham haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last 10 Premier League games against Newcastle, though they’ve only failed to score themselves in one of the last 13, with both teams finding the net in each of the last seven meetings between them.
The last contest between the sides was a seven-goal thriller back in March at St James’ Park, with substitute Barnes striking twice to help Newcastle come back from 3-1 down to win 4-3.
Newcastle vs West Ham Prediction
The Opta supercomputer is backing Newcastle to make it four wins on the bounce in all competitions on Monday, taking the three points in 58.9% of pre-match simulations.
West Ham and particularly Lopetegui need the points, and they come away with just their second away league win of the season 19.7% of the time. A draw occurs in 21.4% of simulations.
The supercomputer predicts these teams will end the Premier League season at differing ends of the table. Newcastle are most likely to finish fifth, with a 23.1% chance of breaking into the top four, while West Ham are projected to finish in 14th place.
