The NHS is in the “worst crisis in its history”, Sir Keir Starmer has claimed ahead of an expected Budget giveaway for the health service.

Wes Streeting, the Health Secretary, confirmed yesterday that he had reached a funding settlement with Rachel Reeves, the Chancellor, ahead of her first Budget on Oct 30.

The NHS is expected to be handed a real-terms funding increase as Labour tries to deliver on its promise to slash waiting lists.

Sir Keir tweeted this morning: “Let’s be the generation that took the NHS from the worst crisis in its history and made it fit for the future.

“Together we can build a healthcare system that puts patients first and delivers the care everyone deserves.”

His comments came as the Government today launched a major consultation on the future of the NHS, promising to put patients and staff at the heart of its 10-year health plan.
