The Legend of Zelda live-action movie is taking shape, with the video game adaptation now getting its official release date from Nintendo.
There’s a lot riding on the new movie. As one of Nintendo’s longest-running and most popular video game franchises, The Legend of Zelda has an army of fans who want the live-action remake to stay true to the source material.
Thankfully, Wes Ball is attached to direct, and he’s a huge fan himself. As he previously told Dexerto, it will be a film “by the fans, for the fans.”
Although casting and plot details are being kept under wraps (for now), we do have an official release date, as revealed on the new Nintendo Today app.
Nintendo drops release date for The Legend of Zelda movie
On Friday, March 28, we learned that the film will drop in theaters on March 26, 2027. In the grand scheme of things, that isn’t too long to wait. Plus, we can expect plenty of exciting details to emerge before then.
The live-action Legend of Zelda movie was first announced back in November 2023, with the game’s creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, confirming he will be on producing duties alongside Avi Arad.
Wes Ball, the filmmaker behind The Maze Runner and last year’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, was then brought on to direct.
Sony Pictures Entertainment and Nintendo are co-financing the project, with Miyamoto promising that the video game company is “heavily involved” in production – in other words, it’s good news for the fans.
Miyamoto said at the time (via Variety): “This is Miyamoto. I have been working on the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega hit films.
“I have asked Avi-san to produce this film with me, and we have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”
The news has been met with a mix of excitement and apprehension. “Awesome news,” wrote one fan, while another said, “Please be good.” A third added, “I feel like that’s something that could’ve waited to be announced,” with a fourth chiming in, “We are thrilled to hear that.”
