The Nintendo Switch 2 Direct introduced tons of exciting new features for the upcoming console, brand new games, and plenty of things to look forward to when it releases — but its battery life will not be one of them.

Being a handheld portable console, the conversation of battery life is always a hot topic, especially when a console as large as the Nintendo Switch 2 is revealed. After all, what’s the point in a handheld if you can’t play Silksong on the go?

Thankfully, during the Nintendo Switch 2 announcements on April 2, tons of new features were revealed, with one being its battery life. Though that was revealed through the console’s website instead of the stream.

Regardless, it seems this battery life isn’t likely to take you very far, especially when compared to its competitors.

Nintendo Switch 2 has a worse battery life than its predecessor

The Nintendo Switch 2 will have a battery life of anywhere between two and six and a half hours, depending on the environment and the game you play. Naturally, the bigger the game, the quicker the battery depletes.

Interestingly, this is almost half the battery life seen on the original Nintendo Switch. For the Switch Lite, it comes in at three to seven. For the newer console, it’s roughly four and a half to nine hours, and for the OLED, it’s the same.

This is a considerable difference between the two, and considering the first iteration of the Switch had a battery life of two and a half to six and a half hours, it’s a huge blow when you incorporate the major hardware upgrade.

In fact, it’s not even comparable to the Steam Deck, which has a battery life of three to 12 hours — considerably higher than its competitor.

Of course, it remains to be seen how reliable the battery is on the Switch 2, but one thing’s for certain: You may need to grab some portable chargers.
