Temperatures dipped to single digits in some parts of the New Territories on Saturday morning but Hong Kong’s weather forecaster said it expected the mercury in urban areas to climb to around 20 degrees later in the day.

The Hong Kong Observatory said the northeast monsoon was bringing generally cold weather to the coast of Guangdong and temperatures over many places fell to 12 degrees or below in the morning.

“Under clear skies, radiation cooling was particularly significant over parts of the New Territories, where temperatures even fell to 8 degrees or below,” the forecaster said.

In remote Ta Kwu Ling and Pak Tam Chung, temperatures dropped to as low as 4.9 degrees. The lowest temperature recorded at the Observatory’s headquarters in Tsim Sha Tsui was 13.9 degrees.

The forecaster issued the cold weather warning at 10.30pm on Friday but cancelled it at 9.40am on Saturday morning.

The Observatory said the weather on Saturday would be sunny and very dry during the day with a maximum temperature of around 20 degrees.
