No Home Wins? 26-Year Premier League Wait Could End on Monday Night

So far, no home team has won in Matchday 4 of the 2026-27 Premier League campaign. Leeds are the final team standing between this matchday’s games and a rare place in history.

Newcastle have the opportunity to make Matchday 4 of the 2026-27 Premier League season a pretty rare one when they travel to Leeds United on Monday.

With nine matches played and just one remaining, we are yet to see a home team win in MD4.

Should Newcastle prevent Leeds from winning at Elland Road, something they have managed in seven of their last eight league visits there, then there will have been no home victories whatsoever across the entire matchday.

If that sounds peculiar, that’s because it is. A full round of Premier League matches without a home win has happened just three times before in Premier League history, and not once in the past 26 years. You have to go all the way back to September 2000 for the last time it occurred:

So, what are the chances of Newcastle completing the set later today?

The Opta supercomputer makes Leeds favourites to win the final game of MD4 at 43.6%, but that still leaves a 56.4% chance of either a draw or a Newcastle victory. In other words, the model suggests it is more likely than not that MD4 will finish without a home win.

Is Home Advantage Fading?

While Leeds dropping points tonight would make MD4 a neat historical footnote, it might point to a wider trend in the modern game.

Despite the last instance of a Premier League matchday without a home win coming 26 years ago, home advantage does appear to be diminishing in the English top flight.

So far this season, 39 matches have been played, and just 12 of those have been won by the home side. There have actually been more away victories (13) than home wins.

It’s still early, but that means the 30.8% home-win rate this season is the lowest in Premier League history. It’s comfortably below the previous record low of 37.9%, set in the 2020-21 campaign when matches were largely played behind closed doors.

Of course, we are only four weeks into the season, so a relatively small number of results can still significantly swing these figures. It’s way too early to simply declare that home advantage has evaporated.

But it could be becoming less important.

Four of the five Premier League seasons with the highest away-win rates have come since the turn of the decade, including the current campaign. Away teams have won 13 of the 39 matches so far in 2026-27. At a 33.3% win rate, it is the fifth-highest in Premier League history.

Whether Newcastle can add another result to that tally, while contributing to only the fourth Premier League matchday without a home win, remains to be seen.

Either way, the numbers suggest the importance of home advantage isn’t quite what it used to be.
