No public secondary school in Hong Kong is at risk of closure this academic year and they will be allowed to operate nine more Form One classes, education authorities have said, while a sector leader has attributed the situation to a rise in mainland Chinese families arriving under different talent schemes.

The Education Bureau also said on Thursday that primary schools would be able to launch three more Primary One classes – one fewer than last year.

The bureau said it had informed affected schools after the annual headcount exercise conducted early last week.

Four Primary One and seven Form One classes were added following the headcount exercise last year.

The bureau also told the Post that no secondary schools would be shut this year as none operates only one Form One class.
